Review the Transport Canada requirements for the Student Pilot Permit. Canadian Air Regulation 421.19 sets out these requirements.
For students who wish to do some preliminary work before beginning a course, this module will guide you through the process of getting your Student Pilot Permit. Although the module is not mandatory, we recommend it as good preparation for your ground school.
Go to CARs 421.19 by clicking on the link to the right. This will open a new window at the Transport Canada website. You may wish to print a copy of the regulation.
Find a Transport Canada-approved doctor and arrange for an aviation medical examination. These doctors can be found all over the world. Click on the link provided below to search in your area.
For the purposes of training for your Private Helicopter Pilot License, or the Student Pilot Permit, you will need to pass a Category 3 medical exam.
If you are planning to enroll in the Commercial License program so that you can make flying your career, you will need a Category 1 medical exam.
Canadian residents can expect to pay between $100 - $150 depending on the individual doctor. Once Transport Canada has received the results of your exam, your certificate will be mailed to you.
The knowledge requirement for the Student Pilot Permit is fulfilled when you pass the PSTAR exam. To do this, you will need the following reference materials:
- The Aeronautical Information Manual
- The Canadian Air Regulations
- The Canada Flight Supplement
To complete the Student Pilot Permit with E-Z Air, you will need to purchase these books, along with other reference materials, through our office.
Refer to the Study & Reference Guide for the Student Pilot Permit. Study thoroughly using the reference materials purchased in Step 3.
When you feel you are ready, take the PSTAR practice exam. You may take the online test, or submit your answers to E-Z Air via email.
An instructor will mark the exam and email your results, along with remarks for correcting to 100%. As per Transport Canada regulations, you will not be given an answer key or the answers to any of the questions.
Please note: We will only accept test submissions from students enrolled in the program.
Use the instructor's remarks to review your weak topics. This is essential preparation for the official written exam.
Refer to the Study Guide for the Radiotelephone Operator's Restricted Certificate (Aeronautical). This is provided in your ground school kit, or it is available as a PDF file download from the Industry Canada website.
Please be sure to memorize the phonetic alphabet.
These activities will prepare you for the required Radiotelephone ground school and exam.
Arrange a time to come to the school to complete the following:
- Student Pilot Permit exam (PSTAR)
(This is a closed-book exam consisting of 50 questions selected from the practice exam. The pass mark is 90%.)
- Radiotelephone ground school - 1-2 hours
- Radiotelephone Operator's Restricted Certificate (Aeronautical) exam.
Finally, to get your Student Pilot Permit, you must meet the experience and skill requirements - which means that the Chief Flight Instructor must be satisfied that you have acquired the flight skills and experience necessary for solo flight.
The Student Pilot Permit is the first milestone in completing the training for an aviation license. It certifies that you are qualified to fly solo for training purposes.
Please note: all 'official' Transport Canada PSTAR examinations must be written in person, under the supervision of our Chief Flight Instructor.
